Alex, our Sydney Senior Account Manager, arrived at a sales career via a circuitous route. We recently sat down with him to chat about his role at Smart Ease, advice to live by, and what drives him every day.
How long have you been with Smart Ease?
I joined the team six months ago.
Have you always been in sales?
After spending more than a decade in graphic design (with a side of marketing), I realised that being stuck behind a desk every day wasn’t really my groove. I decided to put my communication and people skills to good use and make the leap into a sales career – where I found my passion.
For several years, I worked in key accounts for an FMCG brand, but then I had an epiphany. I realised that I wanted to use my talents and abilities to achieve more than just ‘selling stuff in a box’. Around this time, I met Smart Ease CEO, Guy Olian, and was inspired by the company’s business model, ethos and culture. After joining the team in April, I feel confident that I’ve finally found my perfect career fit.
What do you do every day?
I’m the Senior Account Manager for NSW and ACT, so I’m the first point of contact for all Channel Partners in those markets.
My role includes a lot of problem solving, and working closely with our Channel Partners to help them achieve their goals. I see my job as helping them do their jobs better, whether that’s sharing industry data or supporting their sales conversions.
What’s been the highlight of your time at Smart Ease so far?
I’m a relative new-comer to energy-efficiency sector, so it’s been a steep learning curve, but I’ve enjoyed every minute. I’ve learned so much about energy technologies , which has been a real highlight.
I’ve also enjoyed getting to know all the Smart Ease team, especially the other Account Managers. We come from diverse backgrounds, but are all passionate about what we do.
What motivates you to bounce out of bed and come to work?
I like being of the solution to one of the biggest challenges of our time. Working for Smart Ease, I’m working towards reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, and that’s very motivating. We enable businesses of all sizes to embrace renewable energy and a new, sustainable way of doing things – that’s really encouraging.
What do you do in your spare time?
I’m married and I have an adorable one-year-old son. On the weekend, I love spending time with family and friends, watching sport (football, basketball, NRL, AFL – anything with a ball!) and going on adventures with my wife and son.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Network like crazy and don’t burn any bridges – you never know when you’ll have to cross that bridge again.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Nachos, nachos, nachos. Give me a pot of chilli con carne, a bag of Doritos and a block of cheese and I’m a happy man.
